My work is bold, attention grabbing, and chimeric – it takes different forms than would be expected, breaks boundaries, pulls the spectator in and places them in a surreal realm where anything is possible and nothing is ordinary. My work is whimsical and nostalgic – whether it be a secret journal hidden within a goal and mood tracker, betta fish in an alarm clock decreasing as time goes on, or beer bottles hovering ominously before you, nudging you to heed her call – there is a magic present within the design and within the layouts. These designs live in a place of disreality that sets them apart from others.
The inspiration for the whimsical themes in my pieces stems and grows from the monotony and commodification of day to day life and life within the reigns of capitalism. I yearn for the realm that places importance on the arts and artistry of making and creating unleashed from how that art can be bought and sold and maintained as capital, but until this fantasy becomes reality I will settle for one where designers are compensated numerously for their contributions and work.
In contrast to the whimsical side of my work looking to the future, the nostalgia is a look back at a time when things may not have been simpler so much as they were perceived to be by the child's eye, a time when we were caressed by the bliss of ignorance and unknowing, a time when the world could be anything we made of it, and a time when we could curl up and be protected. This aspect adds light and brevity to my pieces which allows for a break from the madness of the world surrounding us; an escape and solace from the fast paced tedium.
Many of my pieces revolve and hinge on the idea of the digital as a place removed, but deeply intertwined with reality, my work being the glitch within this liminal space. A digital display’s pixels interact and overlap the internet in the same way the grid of a screen positioned between window panes creates a moire pattern over our lived reality and the noise of existence. My designs act as that screen, act as a peek into a new exciting space and a shift in perspective.
With the future comes new opportunities to glitch and subvert the norms within different realms of design and art; to shift between these realities with increasing ease and versatility and add more whimsy to the world around me. I will become more interdisciplinary as I dip in and out of a seemingly infinite range of artforms. I will blur the lines between these juxtaposed realities and find what lies within the white space.
