My name is Trevor Morgan, and I’m a Graphic Designer. Art has always been one of the most important and influential aspects of my human experience. Art has really given me a voice and outlet to freely evolve and change, and make me feel valuable as a person. Growing up, I didn’t always feel like I belonged or was accepted for being myself, the arts lent me an outlet to express the way I feel inside, the way I view the world, what the world could be. Music is a huge element in all of my designing whether it inspires a project or motivates me to create. Without art and music, I would not be a graphic designer. Influences like pop music and pop culture inspired me to design from a young age. These were all outlets, in which, I was able to see myself in and express who I am. Design in relation to music has definitely made the greatest impact on me as a designer and what I hope to one day be my professional career. Whether that be creative art directing, creating visuals for tours, designing merchandise, etc.
Being a working graphic designer, depending on your current job you have to be able to access different parts of your creative mind. When you are given a project that allows you more creative freedom, this is where you are allowed to experiment with your personal style and really dive into aesthetics. On the other hand, a project that calls for more of a utilitarian approach would need more of a focus on information and process than design. However, for me, as a designer, this does not mean the design is not important. Rather, it takes more a backseat. You can create clean and subtle designs that reinforce the information you are organizing for people to consume.
Something that is really important to me when creating is meaning. I love when you can reflect multiple characteristics of someone’s personality or beliefs through elements of design and typography. Creating designs that can encapsulate the intentions and actions of a particular organization creates an identity for that brand. One that may stay forever, or evolve with the climate of the company. For me, a lot this lies within self-expression. As graphic designers we are telling a story and communicating about the human condition. To create a strong design you need to have beneficial knowledge that can enhance and reinforce the message you are trying to communicate.
I want to be chosen by other because they know I am capable of seeing and implementing a vision. Knowing how to create your vision for others to see is very important and essential to your career. A good designer sees the vision and can create this world of visuals that are just as important as the content it’s representing. Once viewed, these two things are now tied together and forever associated with each other. So, creating something that accurately depicts and reflects the meaning and message is vital.
