Since I was young, I have used art to express myself. Whether it be for classes or personally, the ability to create allowed me to express my thoughts and feelings, and allowed me to connect with others who felt the same way. It is this love for art that led me to become a designer, and as a designer I enjoy the challenge of solving the unique problems each design gives to me. The process of understanding who a design is catering to and how the design will be seen or used is fascinating to me. As designers we have the ability to reach people from all walks of life, and being able to get our approach to connect with people requires not only good designing skills, but research and empathy.
During the initial stages of designing, I will take time to write out lists of different ideas that I have. This brain dumping really helps me hone in on what ideas I can further develop, and what ideas I can put aside. Then the decision-making process of designing starts, and I always keep in mind how a consumer would view this product and work towards simplifying my initial designs, creating a well-crafted piece that gets the intent across in a creative way without overwhelming the viewer. Logos and brand identity assignments are my favorite to work on, just because there are so many ways to get themes and tone to display in the nature of the typography and imagery within the design. I especially like altering type to create new and unique forms that play into the designs theme and function.
To define my style, I would say that I create modern, minimalist designs that focus on clarity of content through composition. Some elements that are consistent throughout my body of work are large areas of negative space, often paired with flat, bold colors. During the designing process, the development of the composition within a piece is where I take the most time. I enjoy laying elements out in interesting and unique ways, and the way in which elements are placed can translate different themes, messages, or tones. Areas of negative space within my work function compositionally to give ample breathing room, allowing for the main elements included in the design to be the focal point. Organic forms are also added to my designs to create a flow or movement. The use of curves as opposed to straight lines creates a soft flow throughout the entirety of the piece working compositionally to create elements of interest.
I hope through my designs people will see how much effort and thought I put into all my pieces and be inspired by what I created. Through every step I question different placements, interactions, and colors to create the most successful piece I can, and when I see the final products, I am proud that I was able to accomplish what I set out to do.
