I consistently take inspiration from the world around me. As the world constantly changes and evolves, so does design. This is something that I always make sure to pay attention to in order to adapt to the rapid changes that take place everyday. I have always wanted to explore different styles and themes so that I can be as flexible and versatile with any project that I come across. When I begin my work, I always make sure to research the subject to understand what it revolves around. I pay attention to the subjects’ culture, symbols, beliefs, audience and goals, in order to create designs that best relate and represent the project. Typography is also something that I constantly take into account, as it plays such a large part in how our designs are interpreted. I enjoy experimenting with different typefaces and figuring out how it can best interact with my compositions. Color drives a lot of my process as well. Color has such an impact on design, that it can completely change how the audience feels and reacts to the design presented in front of them. I combine all of these elements to carefully compose my designs and best communicate the message that I’m trying to convey.
One of my biggest goals as a designer is to inspire and empower those who have come from a similar background as me. I grew up as the first-born child of immigrant parents who had immigrated from Mexico to the United States of America seeking a better life. I was raised speaking only Spanish to my parents and learning English at school. As I grew up, I was overcome with the constant pressure of doing well in school to end up with a good career. When the time came to decide what career I’d pursue, it was very intimidating to tell my parents that I wanted to pursue Graphic Design, as it is not the typical vision that an immigrant parent would have for their child. No matter how scary it was for them to let me pursue such a career, they supported me in my passion and along the way we have seen what design is capable of doing and how it can make an impact in the world. My parents’ sacrifices and the culture they have raised me in has been a large inspiration in my life and in my work. I hope to be able to create more work that represents my cultural background and the people within it. I want to help give those people a voice that is so often silenced and spread their stories of defeat and success. One of the most basic responsibilities of a designer is to catch their viewer’s eye while also communicating with their audience and making sure that they are doing so in the most clear and concise way possible. Being that this is one of my responsibilities as a designer, I intend to spread not only my message but also the messages of others to the world through the work that I create. I want my work to make the viewer think about what the message means and what the importance of it is.
