Hello! LC Love here, I’m a junior in the Graphic Design program at East Carolina University and I really appreciate you stopping by to take a look at my portfolio.
Who am I and what am I all about? Well, I’m a designer who doesn’t believe in having a favorite typeface, who learns rules to break them, and loves to get their hands covered in ink, glue, and, inevitably, band-aids. Ideation is my happy place, sketching is my bliss, I love the process. I’m a designer who believes that design changes minds, moves the economy, and transforms the world. I’d like my work to be a part of that in any way. I want to help small businesses get off the ground, bring attention to worthy causes, and generally help people through my design work.
I've always surrounded myself with letters, words, book covers, greeting cards, posters and typography. Working in bookstores and libraries, studying material culture and media studies, brought a deeper understanding of these inanimate objects; but, it was the design of the dust jackets, the size and material of the books themselves, the packaging and typesetting that made these objects come to life. As a designer I see myself as playing a part in bringing life to the objects that populate our existence whether they are displayed digitally, physically, or held in our hands. So much power! And with that power comes a great responsibility. A responsibility that I take very seriously, and that is to use my design powers for good.
I focus on typography in most of my designs and find immense pleasure in discovering perfect type pairings (looking at you Rip Tide, feat. Citrus Gothic and Latienne). When I’m not playing the part of Typographic Matchmaker you can find me bent over my scanner or in the textiles lab doing fun design experiments. These analog processes, and others, are big drivers in my creative work and often will become incorporated into my designs or project ideas. The interdisciplinary approach I take to design allows me to make effective and efficient design decisions when I’m given a brief. For example; the Google Doodle above is inspired by the art of letterpressing and the book cover designs are extrapolated results from scanner adventures. (For anybody curious, the typeface in the Google Doodle is HWT Artz designed by Erik Spiekerman through the Wood Type Legacy Project at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum.)
Our globalized and digitized society is up to its ears in information. I see it as my responsibility to design some order into the chaos, to create structure and hierarchy out of madness. This quote by Marshall McLuhan rings true, “As information becomes our environment, it becomes mandatory to program the environment itself as a work of art.” I am heeding the call and doing my part, Marshall!
Just for fun, here's another McLuhan quote that’s always on my mind: “Advertising is the greatest art form of the 20th century.” Controversial? Obvious? What do you think?
